Process Mining Research Study

Exploring cognitive strategies in process analysis

Max 60 minutes One-on-one session Supervised by: Pnina Soffer & Irit Hadar

Research Study Overview

This research study investigates the human and cognitive aspects of process mining analysis, focusing on how individuals reason, make decisions, and cope with uncertainty while analyzing business process event data.

Process mining involves exploring complex event logs, applying filters, and iteratively forming and validating hypotheses about process behavior. While prior research has largely focused on algorithms and automated techniques, this study places emphasis on the human reasoning process involved in process mining tasks.

In addition, the study explores how behavioral signals, such as verbal reasoning and facial expressions, relate to task performance. The findings are intended to support future research on analyst-centered tools and methods for process mining.

Participant Experience

Participants will take part in a live, one-on-one Zoom session with the researcher, lasting up to a maximum of 60 minutes.

During the session, participants will:

  • Perform a process mining analysis task using a process mining tool
  • Share their screen while working on the task
  • Explain their thoughts and decisions aloud (think-aloud method)

The session will be recorded and includes:

  • Screen recording
  • Audio recording
  • Camera (video) recording

Recordings are collected solely for academic research purposes and are accessible only to the research team. Participation takes place in a supportive, non-evaluative setting, and the focus is on understanding the analysis process rather than measuring individual performance.

Full professional experience in process mining is not required. Basic familiarity with process mining concepts is sufficient.
